About the Organisation

CRADESC is a think-tank and an organization under Senegalese law that works exclusively for the recognition, respect and protection of economic, social and cultural rights. It is positioned as a centre for research and action on legislation and public policies in French-speaking West Africa and the Sahel.
CRADESC aims to be a think-tank with recognized skills on economic, social and cultural rights in Senegal and West Africa, through the innovative and relevant nature of its research, the quality of its expertise and its proven capacity to advocate and facilitate a constructive dialogue on these rights.

This role will be part of the African Climate Legal Fellowship Programme (ACLFP), a pilot initiative aimed at bringing experienced lawyers to the environmental public interest sector in Africa and providing pathways for new talent to enter the public interest sector. In addition to the CRADESC placement, Fellows will be part of a broader cohort benefiting from mentorship, coaching and leadership development, training in environmental and climate change law and science, and a network of likeminded lawyers in Africa. Travel within Africa for a launch convening will also be required. IREX, a global non-profit that has supported more than 50,000 Fellows over 50 years, will implement the fellowship and provide ongoing support to you and your nonprofit organization.

About the Job

Under the responsibility of the Director, the role of the Lawyer Specialized in Strategic Litigation in Human Rights will be to prepare, coordinate and lead litigation files of public interest in CRADESC's areas of intervention. He/she will offer legal services and prepare the beneficiaries of the organization's interventions in the defense of their economic, social and cultural rights (ESCR). He/she will support the Litigation and Justiciability Program of the ESCR as well as to the collaborators by providing relevant legal and judicial expertise and solid analytical and communication skills.

Key Responsibilities

  • Defend and represent clients in strategic human rights litigation.

  • Advise and support clients in administrative and judicial proceedings.

  • Develop legal strategies to promote and protect economic, social and cultural rights.

  • Write briefs, legal reports and outreach articles.

  • Participate in workshops, seminars and conferences as a legal expert

Requirements

Qualifications and Experience

  • Four years of professional experience in the profession of practicing lawyer in Senegal

  • A perfect mastery of litigation procedures at the level of national and community courts

  • A very good knowledge of the legal and judicial systems, and possibly of strategic human rights litigation in the French-speaking world

  • A proven interest in human rights and public policies relating to human rights and social justice in Francophone Africa. Some knowledge of these issues is preferable;

  • Proven written and oral communication skills and in writing and presenting reports, articles, notes;

  • A very good command of conversational French and English. And the IT tool, in particular the knowledge of how digital levers work

  • An ability to work within a team as well as independently by demonstrating a team spirit and autonomy to take initiative and be comfortable accomplishing all the tasks necessary for the success of the missions,

  • An ability to positively represent CRADESC in a variety of professional contexts and to participate in its outreach, including to diverse groups;

  • Rigor in work and professional ethics in all circumstances
